I've always used 10w 30 and the cheapest regular oil I could find (Not synthetic) for the first 300-500 miles or so. too slippery of an oil won't allow for proper break in. 5qts should do it unless you have a bigger pan or somethin

Assuming you will be using a non roller cam you should use a break in specific oil or some 15w40 diesel oil.

I swear by the Royal Purple break in oil!!! I wouldn't even build a non-roller engine with today's non-zinc oil, but if you have to run a flat tappet cam, make sure you run EOS or similar additive to get some zinc back in the engine or you're gonna waste the cam real quick!!!

5 quarts, or whatever your normal oil capacity is, of the break in oil.... I run mine for the initial fire up and 30 minute run or so, do a bit of tuning, then dump it and put in the oil you plan on using... Whatever oil you use both for the break in and forever afterwards make sure you run EOS or similar product to get some zinc in your oil for that non-roller cam!!!!

You can get a Lucas brand zddp additive at the zone or at advanced auto. Good for breaking in, and for use after with every oil change. the rotella stuff doesn't have the zinc it used to have.

I would use petroleum oil for the break in. After that, use synthetic if that is what is your preference.

The rings need to seat before you switch to synthetic. Wait til 5-10k miles and switch. You can use break in oil, or you can use regular oil with a break in additive. It's a lot easier to get a holdof a break in additive in my experience. Check out GM's EOS, or Comp Cams' Break In Oil.

i have the same problem with my rebuilt 350... i didnt know what type of oil to use to break it in..so im guessing that break in oil from lucas or royal blue should do the trick?? do i add 5qrts of break in?? or 5 reguaar plus 1 of break in?. and run it for about 30 minutes at 2000rpm ?

You say that you had the motor rebuilt. If I were you, I would ask that question of the rebuilder. I am assuming that there is a warranty, and therefore you would want to follow their recommendations. They know what they did and if you follow their advice, you won't have any issues if you need warranty service.

I'd suggest using something by Comp, Lunati, Crane, or GM's EOS, etc. What I would do is just fill it up 2 qts, dump the break in oil in the gallon jug, mix it up, dump that in, and throw in the extra quart. It'd be filled a little over capacity but that's not a huge deal. I've seen the Corvette club guys actually reccomend that to keep the oil pump fed in hard cornering.

I did find out from Pennsoil that Rotella has 1200 parts per million of zddp. The who ever he was guy told me that it is enough for flat tappets. I have also heard that zddp plus is a good additive. It can be used with modern SM rated oils to bring the zddp up to safe levels.
