what causes a engine to burn less oil with premium gas

I have this dodge neon and I was having to add about half a quart every 2 or 3 weeks but I switched from 87 octane to 93 and now it hardly burns any oil at all. I eventually started using 91 because its a little cheaper and gets the same results. Why does that happen?
