Timing cover seal

Is there anything special to know on replacing a timing cover seal? Does it need to be coated in oil or grease?

I know the harmonic balancer will need to be checked out for score marks, but it should be good since it is only a couple of years old.

Though, I think I've read about putting RTV inside the keyway?

I had replaced the harmonic balancer a while back. And a while ago noticed oil being slung all over the place from the crank pulley. So, figured the seal needs to be replaced. Sure don't want to have to get the balancer pulled for a 3rd time trying to fix an oil leak.

Cut a small 2.5" by 2.5" block of 2x4 to put between the timing cover and the workbench, so the cover won't distort while you're using a 3" by 3" block of 2x4 and a hammer to "press fit" the new seal into position. You don't need any tubes of sealants.

I'm gonna have someone else do it.

I've just read that oil can leak at the key way, so some put RTV there.

Do you need to put oil or grease on the rubber part? I've read of people doing that on the transmission output shaft seal.

It's just strange it is leaking so much up front. But my guess is the timing cover seal as the crank pulley is slinging oil all over the place. I probably would have been better off not replacing the harmonic balancer a few years ago.
