no power

Good day all, i am new here, just purchased an 88 trans am gta......... i was driving along fine, went to accelerate and no power, pushed pedal to the floor and nothing, put into neutral and car would rev up, lots of power. i managed to drive it home, with this acceleration problem. So when i get home, the coolant in the overflow jug is so hot u can hear it bubbling, also the passenger floor was very warm, catalytic converter is under pass feet. today car is accelerating fine, mechanic not sure as its working fine

anyone seen this before? possible causes?

some info on car, 305 TPI, 5 speed

MAF sensor, or maybe plugged cats? I don't remember how hot the stock cats reached.

thanks for the info, i will check, now another question, plugged catalytic, does something inside break to cause the blockage, or would it be a build up of something?

just asking as all is working great today, makes it hard to fix when it works correctly
