Re: TBI to carb swap

Can use any return-style regulator like the Mallory 4309 - but it HAS to be a return style - those regs usually run about $80+ regardless of the brand.

i too went with the mallory return style unit on my last install. you cannot use the cheaper "dead head" units because it will burn out the pump. otherwise, the intank pump will flow plenty much for your carb setup. the mallory also has a good spot to put a fuel gauge (i used and inexpensive summit liquid filled piece) to double check your pressure levels from under the hood.

You'll also need an HEI vacuum advanced dist, the TV cable geometry corrector for the carb linkage (depends on what brand carb), and a sturdy throttle cable bracket with provisions for the TV cable. Lastly, you'll need a method to lock the torque converter in your tranny.

Re: TBI to carb swap

Computer on a TBI car doesn't control fans in any manner, so as long as a fan switch is put back into the head and connected, fans will run. But I always hated the stock-style fan switches and went with a seperate fan controller.

Oil Pressure Sending Unit will run the fuel pump with no changes at all - just takes a second or two for the oil pressure to build and turn the pump on - but carb has fuel in the bowls, so car will start and run plenty long enough off the fuel bowls until the pressure builds and makes the OPSU turn on the pump - so you really don't have to do anything there either. But most of us run a fuel pump relay connected to a hot-in-run and take the OPSU out of the fuel pump circuit.

So for both, you don't have to change anything, but most of us end up changing it for the better.

Re: TBI to carb swap

sorry im new at this, so the opsu tells the cars main computer to run the fuel pump ? so your saying if i ran a relay hot in run it would automaticly turn on the pump ?

Re: TBI to carb swap

No - the OPSU has no connection to the computer.

There are 2 fuel pump circuits - one is controlled by the computer, the computer passes signal to the fuel pump relay, which activates the fuel pump.

But if there is no computer, the fuel pump will still run. The OPSU has a direct circuit from the battery to the fuel pump. Regardless of the computer, when the OPSU gets oil pressure, it will make the pump run until the point where the oil pressure is gone.
