My 89 5.0 wont start
Hi everyone, long time reader first time poster.
I am having a lot of issues but the first one I would like to address is: How do i get my car started. I bought this about 2 months ago, drove it home and there it sat. It is a TBI to carb conversion with a manual fuel pump switch. I flip the switch and the pump comes on but when i turn the key nothing. After reading what i would on here i'm guessing battery, starter, or ignition.
If you want to answer another one:
Why is it when i turn hard right my check engine light comes on but when i turn hard right it comes off? All fluids are topped off.
Thanks for all your help.

If it's not doing anything at all, I'd suspect the VATS system. https://www.thirdgen.org/vats
Might be starter enable relay, nuetral safety switch, ignition switch, a bad ground, any number of things. Take battery out and have tested. If it's good, check the main grounds (battery to body and engine, engine to body). Then check the starter circuit by reading through http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=38
The ground for the starter enable relay is supplied by the VATS - so if there's no ground on that relay, then look into the VATS above.

The key to start the car does not have a chip in it. Does this mean the VAT security has been removed from the car and that can't be the problem?
I'm picking up a new battery tonight.
Thanks

No pellet in key means that someone has bypassed the VATS in the past I guess. But it cannot be removed. So it could be that whatever they did for a bypass is no longer working. Take a look at that tech page for the VATS, and then look under the steering column and see if you can find the resistor that would have been put in place to bypass VATS - maybe it's come undone.

Update: I replaced a couple of wire to the battery, a couple fuses, and the battery and she started started right up. Thanks
