starter issues.

so my starter went out in my 85 coupe with a automatic 305. I got everything unbolted and taken off but i'm having trouble getting the starter out from within the car. anyone else had this problem? the exhaust pipe comin from the engine is in the way and all i need is like half an inch more clearance and it would slide out? what did you guys have to do to get yours out?

Re: starter issues.

Once you disconnect the wiring and unbolt it hold it as if was still attached and move it forward turning it to allow it to go as far forward as possible then turn it downward while turning it to clear its way out, reverse to install.

Re: starter issues.

I have removed the solenoid before, then reinstalled after sliding the starter up past the a-arm. Another time - it just worked without needing that extra space.
