Starting my first engine build, tips/advice?

so im building up my first engine for my iroc, ended up scoring a fulley machined 350 with the rotating asseble already installed and everything for a good price from a local engine shop. My plan and the parts ive got for it are a new comp roller cam, comp push rods and roller lifters, edelbrock pre assemble cylinder heads, scorpian roller rockers, holley stealth ram setup and more but i guess thats just the main stuff.

now im pretty nervous about building this thing but im thinking the hardest/most time consuming stuff is already done haveing the rotating assembly in and heads built right?

any tips or advice before i get crackin? be more worthwhile to just pay a shop to put it together for me?

I say build it if you trust yourself. Its not hard at all. Even putting the rotating assmebly together is fairly easy.

I would buy a good torque wrench. Not a cheap no name one. This is for putting the heads on. I would also buy an adjustable pushrod. This is to make sure you get the correct length pushrods for your motor as they may need to be shorter or longer than factory.

Other than that just take it slow and ask questions if you need to. Its nice popping the hood and saying "I built that".

Re: Starting my first engine build, tips/advice?

just wondering, but when im ready to pull the old engine out, do i have to get new longer bolts to put into the heads for the chain? or can i just back them off enough to get the chain and washers in there? also i got one of those engine balancers that has 4 points to it i guess you would call it, instead of one in the driver side front and one in the pass side rear would i do one in each corner?

thanks

Most likely you'll need longer bolts; be sure to get Grade 8; others may bend.

I've always used a two-point attachment when pulling an engine. Depending on the clearances, I sometimes went with passengers front/driver's rear and other times driver's front/passenger rear. Depends on how easy it'll be to attach and remove the bolts.

Make sure you use thick washers on the chain bolts so the heads of the bolts won't pull through the chain allowing the engine to drop - That's not good.

How confident are you that you can do this project?
