I need help.. my hatch motor just went out and i need to order a new one. the motor broke in the down position so i can't close the hatch i unpluged the moter because you here the motor is running non stop. i need to know is there any way i can close my hatch and get it to lock. the moter is stuck in the down possition and i can't figure a way to rasie it up so it will lock. Anyone know if they have them at the parts store. I know i can order them of Ebay. anyhelp would be great.

 

Same thing happened to my z28. Had to get it off of Ebay. Found one for $65.00. You could try taking the interior trim piece off and inserting a screwdriver and prying the latch up a bit. I couldn't get mine to work, so just parked the car a few days until the replacement came in.

 

yea just bought a new motor. 45 bucks. I tryed to pry it up last night but no luck.

 

When I got my car I had the no latch issue as well, all I did was take the panel off and use some thick zip ties to hold it up enough for it to lock it shut.

 

Help...I have a similar problem. My hatch motor is not working at all but I am still able to shut the hatch by slamming it and can also open it with the console switch as well as my remote from my alarm. But the motor is not operating at all. I am also experiencing a slow drain on my battery which I believe may be related to this problem. When the car sits for a while, the battery dies. I have a brand new battery in it as well as a new alternator. The only other thing that may be causing this is a blanket that I have wrapped around the starter. I installed this a year ago when I started having problems with a dead starter due to excessive heat. Any help from you guys would definitely be appreciated.

 

It could possible be the latch motor causing the drain, you could either pull the fuse for it or simply unplug the wire from the motor to eliminate it.

 

I eyeballed the fuse board and could not find a fuse for the latch motor. In another 3rd Gen thread I read that there is a relay as well as an inline fuse for the motor but for the life of me I couldn't locate either under the dash. I'm just speculating that the two are related (battery drain and non-functioning hatch motor). The car is going on 20 years old and probably just like every other member of this board I refuse to get rid of it. It has just under 170,000 miles on the odometer and so far I haven't done any real major work to it. It's a 5.7 Z-28 with the original 700 R-4 and we call it the coffin 'cause as long as I can keep it running I'm going to be buried in it.

 

Interesting to read this thread. My IROC hatch opens and closes fine, only the motor doesn't work and I am ok with it. I can open it from the inside as well, so I'm gonna leave it.

 

The relay(at least in my car) is located under the back panel near the pull down motor

 

Well, at the moment the rear hatch motor is the only thing operational on my girl. : )

Same thing happened to my 87 sport coup,i just went to the local pick n pull got a new motor and shazam! ($5.00 for the whole latch assembly)

 

I went ahead and bought a rebuilt unit over the internet and will install it as soon as it arrives. Thanks for the info. This is a great & informative message board for guys trying to keep their 3rd Gens alive.
