Tapping sound

Hey I have a light but loud tapping sound coming out of my 305 Tpi. It sounds exactly like a loose/old lifter. I was just wondering if there was anything else that would cause this constant light tapping (fuel injectors?)so I can figure out exactly what needs fixed. Thanks for any help.

Re: Tapping sound

Pull your valve covers, check your rockers. Also, get a long screw driver and put the handle bit up to your ear to try to isolate the tap. Does the tap get louder with rpm/load? If so you're probably looking at an exhaust leak.

Re: Tapping sound

The tap does not get louder under higher rpms just speeds up. Its defintley a mechanical sounding tap not the typical leaky exhaust sound. So I guess that narrows it down that it has to be one of the rockers.

Re: Tapping sound

Yea mine started a couple weeks ago and has not gone away at all. Ill probably end up pulling the valve covers and trying to figure out which lifter it is..which kinda sucks because I just put new valve cover gaskets on a month ago and now have to tear it all apart again.
