Misfire/performance loss. (1986 Trans Am)

When car is trying to accelerate, it loses engine power. Basically i just restored this 86 trans am tpi 305 that my dad gave me. Ever since i changed the plugs to get it out of the garage it was in(10years) its been acting slower than how it should be. Just got the fluids flushed, oil filter and oil changed, and brakes, rotors changed. Any advice to what could be sucking my engine power? Thanks in advanced for your time, i appreciate it.

check your timing. Should be at 6 degrees btdc. Also check for codes, through the diagnostic port with a paperclip.

https://www.thirdgen.org/service-eng...ht-error-codes on your car use pins 5 &6. Put a paperclip in 5 & 6 and turn ignition on, but dont start it. Watch engine light flashes. Let me know

Disconnect your neg. battery cable for a few min. too. Try to restart it and see, but first check for codes, cause disconnecting the battery will erase all codes for a while but they will come back. A code will tell you which sensor under the hood is bad!

Re: Misfire/performance loss. (1986 Trans Am)

Honestly man, it could be a number of things. Are you positive all of your spark plug wires are in the right order? Just checking. You could have something as simple as a clogged fuel filter too. You could have a bad spark plug wire, timing could be off. I am thinking toward your TPS sensor being out of adjustment too. Start with checking for codes, that will tell you which sensor is bad.

I was thinking that your car being an 86' may just use pins 6 &12. Try it and see if your check engine light flashes for you. Let me know , I'll be here.

Re: Misfire/performance loss. (1986 Trans Am)

You know what, try unplugging your MAF sensor. It should be upfront where your air intake is located. It measures the air and prob has a screen in it. You can't miss it. I bet if you unplug that and it runs better then there is the problem.

Re: Misfire/performance loss. (1986 Trans Am)

Ah,i will have to do it step by step, I forgot to say that i put in new brakes, rotors, oil, oil filter, and exhaust. The gas however has been sitting in the tank for 11 years. I will buy the code thing and do the paper clip trick. Thank you so much, I can't do it tonight since i have alot of reading for my college classes. I will get back to u in a day or 2. Once again i really appreciate your help and taking the time.

Re: Misfire/performance loss. (1986 Trans Am)

You don't need to buy anything, just use a paperclip and shape it like a u and then insert one end in pin 6 and the other in 12. Then turn your key on and watch your service engine soon light. I bet it is a bad MAF sensor though. Unplug the electrical connector to it and see. Later

The gas has been in the tank for 11 years? That would be one major problem!

Re: Misfire/performance loss. (1986 Trans Am)

Yeah, the gas was sitting for a while,im trying to burn out all the old gas before i put in the new fill up. I'm also going to do what 91 said and also add fuel injector cleaner when i fill her up. I tried the paper clip trick but the engine light just flashed once. What does that mean?

Drain the tank and replace the fuel filter. You're complaining about loss of power while trying to burn 11 year old fuel? Fix what you know is wrong first.

Fuel filter was replaced before it was put away. I will drain the gas,and fill her up. I'll see if the car runs better.

Fuel turns to jelly after it sits that long. Any crap in your old fuel is likely in your filter now.

Re: Misfire/performance loss. (1986 Trans Am)

I checked mass airflow and everything else nintyone said, everything was fine but i did find these parts as corroded. Also, my dad took the car out and we were driving and flouring it, the first few times into 2nd and 3rd it would change gears laggily. http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSC09156.jpg can u name the part, i would appreciate it. Power sucks *****. http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSC09155.jpg http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSC09154.jpg http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSC09157.jpg

Re: Misfire/performance loss. (1986 Trans Am)

Did you drain all the gas? New fuel filter? Did you check fuel pressure? I would also do new pickup coil, cap, rotor, wires and plugs if it was mine.

Re: Misfire/performance loss. (1986 Trans Am)

I did all new gas, fuel filter, and fuel pressure is good. I haven't done pickup coil, cap, rotor. I put in new spark plugs, and shot the cylinders with mystery oil when i first started it up. Wires and plugs are good. I also bought injector cleaner. Its pretty sad, my dad raced a lexus crapper and for the first 40mph he was with us but then after a delayed 3rd gear shift we left him in the dust.
