Settle a disagreement

I am swaping heads on my 305 with a set of new rebuilt heads, a friend of mine was over to check it out, When he was watching me he noticed that I wasnt keeping the pushrods in order to were they came from as well as the rockers. He said I am to keep them all in order I say no need they are going on a new set of heads, I have done this many many times just like this, just heads and I have never heard this or have I ever had a problem. I told him that the only thing you need to keep in order are the cam and lifters because the lifters are broken in to the cam lobes and that does matter. If you are going back with the same cam and lifters. I am not even taking them out.
Who is right?

Re: Settle a disagreement

I've heard to keep them in order, but I dont really see how it would matter. Its not like a cam lobe where there would be a wear pattern. Its just a rod that pushes on something. I know a bunch of people that have taken motors apart and didnt keep the rockers or pushrods in order and had no problems.

Re: Settle a disagreement

Well I dont have 30 years but I have about 20. And Thats what I am saying. The rockers and pushrods dont have a pattern like cams and lifters do.

To late for that. I am putting on a new set of heads, and I was thinking of putting on a set of roller tip rockers if I can get them for well under 100 dollars. I know it cant hurt but I have never had a problem before. And like many people do I go with what you know.

Re: Settle a disagreement

If pushrod order mattered, then you couldn't replace just one that got bent - and we've all done that.

Re: Settle a disagreement

I've only been told if lifters are pulled & re- used on the same cam
that's hydrolic, then they have to go in the same spot & ride the same
lobe, but with rollers, it doesn't matter as long as the rods are the
same length & the lobes are the same. But if the cam is bigger, then rod
length has to be checked.
Never heard anything about rockers.
