Cant get car to start after putring in new cam

I have a 1985 z-28, I am running a 350 bored.40 over. 1.60-2.02 heads, vodoo cam .507/.507 at 106 deg lube and dual card setup. I put new cam in and lined the dots up on my gear drive dot to dot when my #1 was top dead center. And now when i try to start it it just back fires and blow gas out the carbs. I checked #1 piston and made sure #1 plug were same. I also pulled timeing back off and now my dots are off. crank is at top and cam is at top now. ???????? I dont know how to deg. a cam is that my problem or am i over looking something??????

Where was the distributor when it was lined up dot-to-dot?

You lined the rotor up with the #1 terminal when the timing set was dot-to-dot?

This is could be normal. The cam spins at exactly half the speed of the crank. This means that if you spin the crank over one full time, the crank dot will be back where it started, but the cam will only have moved one half turn.

Sounds like the timing is off. It doesnt matter if the rotor faces number 1 clyinder. You can have it pointing where ever you want. Just pull number 1 plug and spin the motor over by hand till you feel air being PUSHED out. Now line the mark on the balancer up with the timing tab on the timing chain cover. Then when you put the cap back on, remember where the rotor was and put your number 1 plug there. You can also use a timing light to see how far off it is. If it doesnt start, try moving the distributor around a little to see if it helps.

At dot-to-dot the rotor needs to point to the #6 terminal.

I have number 1 cylinder on the cap facing cylinder 2. The distributor doesnt know what cylinder its firing. So long as the cap is lined up correctly with the rotor.
