Idle problem. Please HELP
Idle problem. Please HELP
1984 camaro H.O. all original. Everything has been going fine until recent when we lost our hot summer. Was idle around 800 rpms but now is at 1500.
It doesnt do it all the time, I beleive just when its cold, but it doesnt go down for a while even when the car has warmed up. The longest is about 20 minutes, when I drove to work today.
Regretably i turned it off one time when it was at 1500 and the engine made a clunking/knocking noise and since then i wait until it goes down to 800 before turning it off.
Was thinking the throttle mite be stuck, but why does it go back down then? I tried moving the throttle back when the engine was running and it felt like it was all the way back.
Any clue on what im dealing with?
Not great at explaining so just let me know if something i said is confusing or if you have just any other questions

Is your choke light on before you start the engine, and off after it starts?

If it's always off, make sure the choke wire is still connected. If it is and the light still doesn't come on before you start, replace the choke coil.
Re: Idle problem. Please HELP
Checked the car before starting and everything looked to be in good order. I moved the throttle and heard the butterfly piece click and when i looked at it it was closed. So I started it up and immediately went to 1500 rpm's. The butterfly piece opened and the lower i closed it the lower my rpm's went.
I didnt close the actual butterfly part but i pushed down on the little rod that controls it. If this is the coil your talking about then i wouldnt doubt. My air cleaner almost rest directly on top of it( it was opening the butterfly part as i was trying to put it on)
Any input? the choke light it still off.

Sounds like the choke coil needs adjustment.
When you say "butterfly", do you mean the wide flat choke blade on the top of your carburetor?
