Timing Chain
Do I need to drop the pan in order to change my Timing Gears? I have been leaning toward yes, but I have a friend teeling me no. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Timing Chain
No, the front seal will be destroyed and you will need to use some finnesse, so as to not distort the cover. When you are ready to install, the tabs in the corners of the front seal lip will need to be trimed. If you drop the pan, you will need enough room to clean up properly, which means removing the pan. The only way to get enough room to remove the pan is to jack up the block away from the K-member. Disconnecting the exhaust, unbolting the engine mount halves, loosening the trans mount, etc.........

Re: Timing Chain
usually do not have to drop the pan on 1975-85 SBC
i did not have to on my '82 and '84 engines-IIRC,
'86 up have a 1 piece molded rubber pan gasket
-on those you probably will have to lower the
pan,but might be able to leave the gasket in
place and reuse if it is still good
