Accelerating problem

This is kind of hard to explain but I will try. On my 88 305 TPI GTA the car runs great untill I try to go....When I just give it throttle(no matter how much), from idle or not it hesitates really bad. If I pump the throttle once or twice it is fine and runs fine. If I am just cruising and I give it throttle you barely notice it untill it all of a sudden picks up and goes.....Kind of like it has VVT. It doesnt effect the way it starts or under WOT, I havent had this car that long and this is the first TPI I have owned so if this is normal I would just like to know and I guess I will live with it.
