-97 5.7 no fire
I know I’m a bit ”off”
This is about a -97 5.7 f-bird with only 2200miles on it.
After a “over-rev” (missing gear and some how “fan belt” pulley on crank came off) and engine dies at the same time.
Just small attempts to fire every now and then after replacing pulley (oem. pulley newer found) – no “start” only a single “fire” now and then.
I had it town to a garage to let them run a computer test, all is fine (according to them) except no start….
They also did a compression is = ok.
-And they still could not get it started ether.
.
Anyone out there run in to this before?
I’m in need of some advice and guidance here
.
If I’m to run an odb diagnose my self, using my laptop what program do I need and what cable
Only done obd:s on audis, mercs and beemers my self on my laptop.

Re: -97 5.7 no fire
possibly the pulley or the belt hit the opti-spark distributor when
it came off and damaged one of the optical pickups in the dizzy?
How did the pulley come off-did the hub that fits over the crank
come off with it?-could be wrong, but IIRC,on an LT1 the shaft
key for that hub is shared with the crank sprocket and if that
key came out,the sprocket may have turned and got the cam
out of time...Does the engine sound unusuall when cranking
-like there is no compression?

Re: -97 5.7 no fire
Not sure what "fan belt" pulley you are referring to - LT1 has electric fans, no pulley.
If the water pump pulley came off, maybe there's an issue with the water pump - did it leak fluid from the water pump? LT1 has an Optispark distributor under the waterpump - if waterpump leaks on Optispark system it can kill it, and new Optispark is about $275US for cap, and $700US for unit itself.
Wires - maybe belt/pulley caught a wire and yanked a plug wire off. You'll have to look from under to see where the wires run to the Optispark. If needed, new wires are about $65US - I just changed wires on my LT1 this week.

Thank you 8t2 z-chev and camaronewbie!
I will lock at all the clues you’re “pointing” at.
The crank sprocket key feels like the most likely fault as there were no faults found by the “garage” using there “computer”
I suppose a mechanical fault of that kind will not “make” a faulty code !?
And when the garage fitted the new pulley the sprocket might have got squeezed tight but a bit off.
