Starter grinding?

I'm not sure how to fix this.. Its a 1990 camaro 305, ram flywheel, jegs mini starter. I've got it shimmed so the starter sounds fine, but once every 4 or 5 starts the starter will grind. To me it looks like the starter is too far away from the flywheel, the starter gear is beginning to spin before the teeth on the starter are engaging the teeth on the flywheel. Is there any way to move the starter closer to the flywheel?

Re: Starter grinding?

Depending on the mini-starter sometimes there are shims between the starter motor and the clockable plate. If you have the mini-starter that has the adjustable plate you can mark the mounting holes for the bolt(s) remove them, remove the plate, and look to see if there is a flat shim in it.
