Did the rings not come with labels/instructions?

Re: 385 shortblock help...

ok i have half of it figured out. the spacer rings installed on either side of the oil ring to lock it in place. now i need to know if anybody knows which one is the top ring and which goes in the middle. one has a chamfered corner and one has a small dimple. i know the dot and the chamfer point towards the top of the pistom but i do not know which order.

Re: 385 shortblock help...

chamfered corner? Does it look like this?

If so thats the second ring. If not it could be a different type of ring pack. Mahle has different ring styles depending on the kit you use.

A tapered face or beveled edge (side that faces the cylinder wall) should be a second ring as it acts like an oil scraper.
A rounded/barrel face is commonly used as a top ring. The dimple should mean that side up. Just my guess from what i'm reading on mahle's site.

I cant remember off hand, but I believe my JE piston ring kit had a dimple meaning that side faces UP

Re: 385 shortblock help...

.040" over piston instead of typical .030" over 383.

The other way is a .060 over 400 with 3.5" crank. A .030" over 400 with 3.562" crank is 386.

Re: 385 shortblock help...

that is what they look like and ive been informed that that is the top ring, chamfered corner up, the other ring is just rectangular and is the second ring(middle) sorry for taking so long was out of town for the weekend.

to answer the question about the 385 its just a 383 build with .040 pistons instead of .030. the only reason i went this rout is because the machine shop didnt think the cylinders would clean up and +.030 so i went 40 over to be safe.
