383 cam suggestion...
here's my set up.
350 with 4 bolt main, Vortec heads (062 casting), Cyclone intake manifold , Flowtec hedders, and a tiny 600cfm Edelbrock.
I am thinking about getting a new camshaft, but dont know which one. My car is a daily driver, but I still want something that has kick. I dont mind the rough idle. Thanks for the help.

The first question is: Have your vortecs been modded for more lift? If not you're going to have to measure very carefully to see how much lift you can get away with. Biggest cam I could safely use with my vortecs was the voodoo 60101. And thats a fairly mild one.

Re: 383 cam suggestion...
Chances are if you didnt have them modded yourself then they havent been. But theres a picture at the bottom of this article http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/ho...458/index.html showing a modded spring seat next to a stock. It also explains the reasons why they need to be modded and what can be done. Basically the space between the top of the valve seal and the bottom of the spring retainer only allows somewhere between .430 and .470 lift unless the seat is cut down.
Thats about all I can tell you. I'm familiar with the vortecs, but know nothing about cam selection for a 383. So I hope somebody else comes in and helps with that. They will need to know if your engine block uses a flat or roller cam first.

Re: 383 cam suggestion...
If you get them modified for more lift, the Comp XE274 would be an excellent cam for a 383. I would suggest a bigger carb too, like a 750.

Re: 383 cam suggestion...
thanks for the info guys. yes i did forget to mention i am NOT using a roller cam. and as far as the carb is concern, your right....i realise its too small, but my train of thought on that is that apparently my T5 tranny and stock Iroc diff are too week to handle the power of a healthy 383. So if the power of a "regular" 383 is approximately 450hp, and i lose about 50 to 75 hp because i am using a smaller carb, then i will be ok with that because i will save my tranny and diff......until i get the budget to upgrade them. Does that make sense?
