86 IROCZ 305 TPI Intake gasket R&R Question
Now Ive looked on the forum for this question so I wasn't a repeat. I have a 86 IROCZ 305 TPI. I noticed that the back of the intake on the driver side had a bit of coolant and it was bubbling from the engine heat. My guess is it is the intake gasket going out. The motor does have 96k miles on it and I assume its all original. I've looking into doing the R&R for the gasket and it has me breaking down the entire intake. From Plenum to the runners and fuel injection and rail. My questions is how far can I go with out breaking it all down to eliminate any other problems I could mess up down the road. Like fuel pressure or vac line or who knows..... I am used to doing carb intakes, so thats easy. I know I will have to drain a bit of the coolant and disconnect the battery, pull the distributor, part of the air filter stuff like mass air flow sensor and so forth. I am a little unsure of the fuel line part. I know there is a pressure bleed off valve to let go of the pressure and then just disconnect the lines. But it calls to remove all of that, but I would like to leave it on so not to mess up or dirty the injectors or have to buy more parts like new o-rings. I got a new intake gasket kit. I am fine with doing new gaskets for the runners and the new intake. And I know I will have to get a Torx star sockets for some of the bolts. Would anyone know what size I will need of hand to speed up my job? It looks like a T-45 or so.....
So basically I am trying to make this job easy and quick and to eliminate any F-ups down the road. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I also plan on replacing the oil sending unit and temp sensor and thermostat and do a oil change and coolant flush.....
just looking for a little advice....

Hey Brother I'm doing the same ting on my L98. You will need a new intake gasket set, buy the felpro kit. It comes with new o rings for the fuel lines and the injectors. Pull the fuse for the fuel pump and just run her out of gas, then hit the schrader valve and release any left over pressure.

But why does the injectors and rail have to come off? Are they in the way of something? Why cant they just stay on. Less work.... Are they easy to take off? isnt there a clip or something? Ive always used RTV on my gaskets, I am sure no need to use it on the runners gaskets....?

Re: 86 IROCZ 305 TPI Intake gasket R&R Question
I finally got to it today. I am all tore a part, the next thing is to just clean up everything and start the install part of the job. But I did prove that I didnt have to take the fuel rail and injectors off to just remove the intake. and I left the EGR on too. But I might still remove the rail and injectors to replace the o-rings, but if they didnt have any problems I dont see why I should. The nice thing is I took notes and pictures to write a tech article.

Re: 86 IROCZ 305 TPI Intake gasket R&R Question
ok I did the intake job, and replaced the oil sender unit, and after i let it warm up to check the gasket for leaks and anything else I noticed that as it warmed up it was losing oil pressure, and it was just dropping as it got warmer.....
So what happened last time was it was just low on oil, and since my driveway is at an angle is what threw me off, so I waited for it to be on flat ground and filled it up. So now I am waiting for it to kool off and wait for the oil to sit down and at a flat level.... Did I get a bad sender? or do I have other problems? I might just get a mechanical gauge to see if I have a really bad oil issue....
There is no oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil, and no leaks that I see for now.... Maybe a clog somewhere?
