87 diaster

Hi, first off my name is jean, and I own a 87 firebird formula am 305, I had an account awhile back but lost the passwords and what not. The other day I was trying to get my car home from work and she wouldn't stay running, so I used the manual choke like always...well the choke got stuck half way in and was force to drive about five miles home like that. She would not gret over thirty flooring her.. next morning I started her up and herd a clunking when I would idel my car at a thousand rpm to get her going and it would clunk I would feel the thump in my gas pedal and my car would shut off or loose power..after a few times of flooring it to get it over a grand she would be fine, I would drive it and get half way up my drive way which is a steep hill and she would clunk and jerk and almost die, after doinf that about five times as long as I kept it on it wouldn't do it after initial start up, I noticed my oil pressure was at almost sixety on start up, and it was sluggesh. On top of that I noticed its taking a long time to shift (its an auto) I'm not sure what it is, I floored it to try and get the oilpresseue down and it just didn't pick up and speed just stayed a forty and made its normal engine roar idk what is up with it...any ideas?

Re: 87 diaster

well first you need to fix the choke, figure out why its binding and repolace it, fix it whatever, thats gonna be step one, its like a shot in the dark trying to diagnose a problem when the choke isnt working properly

oh and by flooring it youre raising oil pressure, more fuel, rotor spins faster, plugs spark, piston goes down creates power....oil pump turns faster putting oil through the motor faster raising pressure etc etc

Sorry I should have been more specefic on my choice of words, I didn't mean floor it, I just meant get on it simply because I don't normaly do that in my car do to my poor gas milage and the out of the *** price for gas as it is, and my choke got stuck but the next morning I was able to push it in just fine, and when I had the choke in that's when all of my noises and problems started

Re: 87 diaster

Do you have the stock quadrajet in it? And if so, have you replaced the choke relay on it located next to the battery ground cable on the right fender?

Re: 87 diaster

My friend suggested that and idk if it matters but I got a new holley 600 carb and an edel brock manifold thrown on about two months back and had the manual choke installed then, my old rockchester was shot, idk if that matters lol I'm still new to the whole carb motor as I used to just know imports lol.
