Code 24
Of course right before my car has to get smogged I get a check engine light. Checked it and its code 24. My speedo used to bounce around and squeak real back ,but now it doesn't work. Is it for sure my VSS that is bad?

Re: Code 24
your speedo is cable driven, your VSS may in fact be bad but thats not the cause of your speedo crapping out, check the VSS and make sure its connection is good, if it is and its shot swap it out, as for your speedo id take a look at your cable

Re: Code 24
The VSS is right behind the speedo on '82-89s and
works by reflecting a light beam off the rotating magnet
in the speedo,so no speedo=no VSS signal.
Sounds like your speedo bearing got dry, started binding
and chattering and twisted the cable-you will need to
oil the bearing before replacing the cable or get a new
speedo head if it's seized good...

Re: Code 24
If the vss is on the cluster then how is it possible to install aftermarket gauges with a t56 since they won't accept a cable driven speedo? Without an expensive mod that is

8t2, BTW, is correct: The VSS is on the back of the cluster (90+ have the VSS on the tail shaft). It's the small yellow box to the left in the following pic.:

Re: Code 24
Ok fixed! Removed the stock two piece cable and replaced with a one piece cable. BUT...I still randomly get the same code. I am going to try to leave my battery unplugged overnight to see if I have to reset the system.

Re: Code 24
Long ago my 85 used to show a check engine light, code 24, when the car idled for a few minutes, then go off after I'd driven a block or so. The shop manual says to disregard the code if the wheels aren't turning.

Well, the problem is, I have to get it smogged soon. I don't think you can have the check engine light on at all for any reason.
