Wont crank sometimes, please help I am going insane!

Ok here is the story, I really need help here. I just bought a 1992 Firebird, 5.0 tbi v8. The car is in awesome shape and runs like its brand new. But there is a catch. When I got the car I was under the understanding the starter was bad. It was making a loud whizzing sound (as if starting with car already on) about 1 out of 10 tries. Also, about 1 in 20 tries it simply wouldnt turn over at all. The lights would come on and radio and all that, but just nothing! No clicks or anything. When this would occur it wouldnt start for hours or even days after. So I replaced the starter and everything was perfect. Well today I drove 2 miles to the store, came out and NO CRANK. I am upset I thought it was fixed. I had to turn the key about 200 times to get it to finally turn over and it started right up. What can this be? Enable relay? Flywheel? Bad ignition? I just dont get it. I cleaned the battery terminals and there is no issue there. This is something that randomly comes up at random times and its a pain in the $#@ when it happens, I get stranded. What would cause something like this and be so random and out of the blue. Please advise on what I can do, I dont have a lot of money to put into it right now, and this seems like a minor issue but what is it??

Thanks VERY much!

you should rig something up where you can remotely start it ... if when this happens again and your remote start rig works, then you should look into replacing the ignition switch which is located underneath on the steering column... not the ignition switch...

without actually diagnosing it, it could be a bunch of things... anything from Vats to a loose to a corroded wire...

Re: Wont crank sometimes, please help I am going insane!

I was having the same problem on my 89 GTA. It ended up being the VATS wires in the lock cylinder or something loose up in the column. I think when mine wasn't starting the security light wouldn't come on when I turned the key to the on position. U can measure the resistance of the key with a ohm meter, get a resistor, then cut two small wires that run up the column and install resistor. I think mine took a 6000 ohm resistor, but there is like 12 different chips used on these cars.
