Re: hard start when motor cools down

TBI or TPI. in tbi its to be expected but tpi should be quick and easy to turn over. notice does your fuel pump engage imedietly when you turn the key froward or only after a bit of cranking if the fuel pump isn't engaging imeditly its basically not priming the system which means you will have no fuel to burn so no start

Re: hard start when motor cools down

Fuel pump should come on for 2 seconds when you first turn the key on. Then come right on when you turn the key to start. It could be that the check valve in the pump isnt holding pressure. It could also be coolant temp sensor. If it's TPI, it could be the cold start injector.

Re: hard start when motor cools down

The trouble with manual choke conversions is getting one with a decent cable. No one makes a decent choke cable anymore. They bind and kink and cause problems. Repairing the factory auto choke is generally a more satisfying result. Just need to understand how to diagnose and repair it. Most of the later units were electric and the electric thermostats fail.

Oh, then you must have put the carb on it yourself.

Re: hard start when motor cools down

you may want to just replace all sensors and that may fix your problem completely.

Re: hard start when motor cools down

i would do a fuel pressure test. but thats just me. or hell even just trying to replace your fuel filter, could be clogged and creating problems. cheap fix and if its not the problem well at least it was cheap.

Re: hard start when motor cools down

CK1987 and foxmartin, Your symptoms sound similar. I would definitely check fuel pressure. It shgould come up when the key is turned on. Then when you turn the key to start the engine, pressure should come up to 40-45psi and stay there while you crank. You may also have cold start injector issues. Test the cold start injector by removing it from the manifold and holding over a glass jar while a helper cranks the engine. A strong spray of fuel should come from the injector while cranking a fully cold engine.

Re: hard start when motor cools down

250 a piece is a pretty good deal. I usually see refurbishing's go for around 350 or so. It also depends on if you want the first gen iroc-z rims or the second gen. Then theres the third gens that came out in 90-92.. Not my fav.
