G92 Camaro vs 5.0 Mustang GT (classic 1990 street race)
...most Mustang fellas didn't realize that GM offered many performance options with the 3rd generation F-bodies, like the beloved and quite rare 1LE option which was GM's answer to the Saleen Mustang... and the mean 5-speed TPI models with the G92 option, and the L98 "torque terrors" that gave even the 5.0 coupe notchbacks fits from stoplight to stoplight action... here is an example of what a low optioned hard-top 5.0 liter LB9 IROC-Z coupe sleeper with 5-speed tranny and (after 1990) "G92 full performance package" option, could do to a heavy and fat optioned 5.0 Mustang GT cruiser.
There was alot of "non-performance" optioned F-bodies from that era, that were produced as a "cruiser" more than a "performer", with luxery options instead of performance options, that gave the 3rd generation F-body a bad reputation on the streets. But when a Mustang pulled up next to a "real performing" sleeper F-body that only weighed in at 3,200 lbs. with no T-Tops or other creature comforts, and packing the 5-speed tranny and GU6 code 3.42 posi rear, and the N10 code performance exhaust, and 1990 and later G92 optioned manual cars equipped with the most aggressive camshaft ever offered in a 3rd gen F-body (only the G92 manual models)... those little light in the *** 5.0 Mustangs were in for a bit of a shock...LOL!!! So here you go my 3rd gen brothers, enjoy, this classic street race from back in the day.
I have loads of 3rd Gen videos that I have shot and compiled through the years... if anyone is looking for anything particular just let me know. I have street action and even an ultra rare 1LE optioned 1992 Camaro Z28 and a G92 optioned WS6 Formula Firebird in some road racing action... doing what they were produced to do! I also have tons of LT1 Camaro footage for the fellas into the early 4th Gens.

Love that video, I've seen it many times - AND SHARED IT!
I ordered my '89 IROC with the (big cammed) LB9, N10 dual cats, T-5, 3.45 BW rear end and I never had ANY problems with any 5.0 Mustangs back then. The looks on the 5.0 drivers' faces were priceless. They probably figured, how did this peanut cammed, 2.73, auto, just blow my doors off?
I'm sure a 5 speed/3.08 LX sedan would have probably beaten me (in a straight line ONLY), but I never encountered one of those with my G92.

Re: G92 Camaro vs 5.0 Mustang GT (classic 1990 street race)
Awesome man... cool to see you here. I had a thirdgen.org account years ago, but didn't keep up with it (don't even remember my username anymore) so figured I'd start another, and this would be a great place to share some of my old 3rd gen footage from "back in the day", because the members here would actually appreciate and understand the non-run-of-the-mill Camaro and Firebird.
So many 3rd gens got a bad rep because of the abundance of "economy version" and underpowered TBI RS models running around getting killed by the little "Fox-Bodied" 5.0 liter Mustangs (which I've owned quite a few of and love equally to the 3rd generation F-Bodies)... but most of these Mustang guys have no idea about the performance optioned F-Bodies of that time, like the rare 1LE, G92, or "Special Service Police" 5.7 equipped B4C RS models (equivalent to the SSP Coupe Interceptor Mustangs) , or the L98 or "Canadian Players Cup" R7U models...
They don't know (unlike Ford) GM offered many versions, many camshafts, rear end gear ratios, etc. And they just never came across a real performing F-Body... yet...LOL!!! There are some damn nasty F-Bodies that came from the factory. And don't get me started about the super ultra rare 1992 Firehawk. That monster is legendary, and I'll sell one of my kids for a '92 SLP Firehawk Firebird. (ok, maybe not sell a kid, but you get what I'm saying) That car is a full blown Supercar... or the 1989 Garrett Turbo'ed (Grand National famed) Turbo GTA Trans Am...
Again, nice to see you here...

Re: G92 Camaro vs 5.0 Mustang GT (classic 1990 street race)
Yeah, most Mustang guys don't realize that there are different models besides the slow TBI injected 170hp RS models. I have an old Motor Trend from back in the day where the put a base 5.0 EFI 225hp Mustang LX versus a base 5.0 TBI 170hp Camaro RS in a knock down drag out showdown... and of course the LX killed the Camaro in every event. Those bias b#stards should have used a base 5.0 liter TPI powered Formula Firebird with 5-speed and G92 option... would have been different outcome. But Ford and Motor Trend had a very close relationship back in those days. The editor of Motor Trend actually raced for Steve Saleen, for one example.

If I get a chance this weekend I'll scan and upload it to my website... I have quite a few other road tests on there, from that era, if you want to read them to hold you over...

Now THAT I'd like to see. I'll be running Time Attack with a 92 Player's Camaro this year, with nothing but a set of Konis, Hawk pads, and Kumho 265's.

<~~~~~~~ has a G92 5 speed 91 z-28. First off great thread. and I love the look on the guy's face driving his mustang when my old camaro starts pulling legnths on him from the red light and he can't catch up. priceless. the 350 I swaped in backed by the 3:42 gears makes this old camaro a force to be reconed with at the red lights.

Re: G92 Camaro vs 5.0 Mustang GT (classic 1990 street race)
Sorry it took so long to reply, lol.... anyway, I actually found the article already uploaded on the stangbangers site. I just wish they had matched up a G92 optioned 5-speed 5.0 TPI rather than the 5.0 TBI model. It would have been a dead even match-up on the straights and Camaro domination with the braking and handling.

Used to have a hard time with the 5.7 autos Fbody/Vettes with a 5.0 that was back when they were new. If I could hook it could go either way for awhile. Those were fun times, if you had a IROC or 5.0 with a test pipe and flos it was a big deal. Sorta LOL
Almost bought an 89(??) IROC from Hawaii 350 AND 5 spd. Thing would get squirrely in 2nd no problem. Too bad it was an ins rebuild and had front end issues.
Was gorgeous, black/gold

Cool to see you here. I have seen your videos numerous times over the years and it's good to see you spread the enthusiasm for the quickest thirdgens.
My new project is a G92 restoration / restomod which will probably be getting a modified 305 when the paint and body is done (in progress). 5 speed, G92, N10, J65 options. Should be a decent running car that looks great.

Yes the 5 speed had a different cam then the 5.7. that was done so the 5.0 5-speed cars could keep up with the 350s.

When my IROC was new I lived just outside of Boston & worked in a town called Watertown. There was a 5.0 LX Mustang running around with a license plate that said RACEME......so I did....often.....and never lost!
