1984 Z28 Mod

Right now I have a stock 305 HO in a 1984 Z28. I'm putting summit shorty headers on it, a lunati 60103 voodoo cam .489/.504 lift, non-egr intake manifold, 2 dynomax bullets, and a 2400 stall converter. Would I be okay to take out the egr and the sensor in the exhaust manifold and put on the stuff that I want and it not mess with the computer? And would the 2400 stall be good with these mods?

Also what do you think this combo might run with the above listed.

Also running the mods with 3.73's, and shift kit.

the only thing i can really mention right now is to make sure you take out the pulley for the AIR and EGR, pretty heavy and will clear room.

you might have to have the EGR code tuned out

Re: 1984 Z28 Mod

At least on my '83, I disconnected my EGR back when I had a Weiand Action Plus intake on it with a block off plate and had no issues or check engine light. Gotta remember that computers back then didn't control much - especially on the L69 cars. I also had a Crane compucam 2040 with no computer issues as well as TES headers...

I didn't have any sensor on my exhaust unless you mean the O2 sensor, and I kept that hooked up.

Block off the EGR valve if you want. The ECM will throw a code unless you keep the EGR plug connected. These cars aren't smart enough to realize it's not really there. You may run a bit rich though...so you'll have to tune your car with that in mind.

The sensor in the exhaust is your O2 sensor, on the drivers side just above the Y-pipe. You will want to leave that, it helps the ECM run the CC Qjet with the mixture solenoid. Also, it will help you tune by telling you if the computer thinks you are running too rich/lean.

Re: 1984 Z28 Mod

I ran my car for 4 years with a EGR blockoff plate and the plug disconnected. Never threw a code, so Ozz1967 is right when he said "These cars aren't smart enough to realize it's not really there". Easy enough to test if it'll throw a code on your '84 though...just unplug it and see if it throws a code.

I also passed emissions EVERY time with flying colors - with an aftermarket cam, intake and headers. I also didn't have the air system hooked up - the air manifolds on my TES headers were capped off AND I took off my AIR pump, and removed the AIR divertor valve and left it unplugged. It wouldn't have passed a visual, but thankfully my state didn't require any visual - just a sniffer.

So far as the O2 sensor goes - make sure you have a O2 bung before your header collector and it's plugged in or you won't get a signal to the MCS in your carb to control the A/F at idle.

i kept my o2 sensor but i got rid of the EGR stuff. the check engine light came on so i just took out the bulb, the car did run a little rich but still ran well

EDIT: Come to think of it, Yeah, i did have a EGR blockoff plate on the intake back then, but the more I think about it...I think I may have took the pintle out of my EGR valve and bolted that to the top of the blockoff plate and plugged the EGR back in. Even though it wasn't actually doing anything, the computer was satisfied so I didn't get a code...

Re: 1984 Z28 Mod

My computer is no longer hooked up to the carb. Would I still need the o2 sensor?
Does the setup I want sound good or is there any thing I need to change?
What might it run in the 1/4?

The above question made me think you were trying to run a computer still. If you're not, then you need a regular carb along with a distributor with a vacuum advance. Other than that, you can put whatever you want on it. And no, you don't need the O2 sensor unless you plan to hook it up to a A/F ratio gage. Don't need any EGR either.

I don't have the computer hooked up to the carb now and it runs fine. So will I still need to get a different carb and distributor?
