stock l98 iron heads any good?

Have an 88 irocz with the l98, just wondering how good are these heads.. valve size and combustion chambers and if ported and worked over can they flow well enough to be worth it or am I better off getting some vortecs or something for the money? Any help appreciated thanks.

They are decent heads that benefit from port clean-up and better valves (like Manley's).

Vortec heads have great intake ports and better combustion chambers than L98 heads. The exhaust ports are a little weaker, but can be made to flow. All other things being equal, Vortec heads will make more power than L98 heads.
