Oil Pump Sleeve

Question of ignorance as usual due to my CRS. I am replacing my oil pan and pump. I pulled the old, went to slap in the new, and realized I have this little nylon spacer that I assume goes on the oil pump's driveshaft. The one that I'm replacing didn't have one, and I honestly don't recall if I used one- or if one even came with the pump- when I built the engine 4 years ago.

With it installed, the intermediate shaft (from pump to distributor) doesn't engage enough for liking....is this normal, or do I need to trim the height of the nylon sleeve down some? I'll try and get some pics and get them posted.

Pump is a M155 with a Canton bolt on pickup (Loctite used on all 4 bolts). It's whatever sleeve came with the M155.

Re: Oil Pump Sleeve

F the little nylon sleeve. You don't want it.

Go to VatoZone, and order a Melling IS-55E. Ask for it by part #, you'll have to, theres not really any specific application you can ask for that will get it. Stand back from the counter and salaaam in wonder when they have it in stock (they probably will) and show it to you. It's awesome.

Cool, eh??

Re: Oil Pump Sleeve

I've replaced stock oil pumps with stock pump drives. The sleeve is never reusable. It always breaks when you try to take it off. The local GM dealer has a drawer full of them and they're cheap.

If you use an aftermarket oil pump drive shaft, it will have a metal sleeve attached to the shaft. Never falls off, never breaks etc.

Re: Oil Pump Sleeve

I just found out that my intermediate shaft does have the steel sleeve, and it is pinned, so I need to remove the nylon sleeve. I out smarted myself. THANKS for the help fellas! I didn't want to get the pump in and have issues or worse and have to pull the engine again!
