cant pass smog...cars running way to rich
hey guys im having a bit of trouble getting my car to pass smog...i have a 92 trans am 305 tpi...anyways at first i replaced the fuel injectors because a few were bad...i listened to my step bro and went with bigger injectors at first...tried to smog and it was way to rich...well now i have new stock injectors in it and i tried to smog it and it was still way to rich...my smog pump seems to be making a weird noise but i dont think that would be the problem...so im guessing the o2 sensor but if any1 else has any other ideas i would appreciate it
thanks in advance

when i went to get my car smogged it did not pass the first time. what is your idle set at? I went ot a friend of mine and he said the sure way to pass emissions is to set your idle at about 900rpm. mine was originally set at about 756. So i bumped the idle up. he also had me run some techron fuel injector cleaner. he had me pour it in with a almost empty tank and then fill up. then he said to run the car till it is almost empty without filling up because it would dilute the additive. After that he said drive the car on the freeway for a good half hour to get the car nice and hot and then head straight over to the check station and have them check it. i did this and sure enough i got my car to pass and it passed with flying colors. Hope that helps you a bit

HerbZ28 and Just Cruzin both give good info. The coolant tyemp sensor is probably he most common cause of rich AFR at operating temp. Often, a failed CTS will cause both crummy cold starts and poor running when warm. You mentioned the O2 sensor. This is the second most common cause of rich or lean AFR. Raising idle speed and the Techron treatment are also very helpful in lowering exhaust emissions.
