Need to know more about the car. Have you done anything to it? Original engine? Modified it in any way? Failing just the smog or the visual too?

Re: Will not pass smog

Try running denatured alcohol. get your tank real low and pour about a gallon of ethyl based alcohol in there. Aim for a 1:4 alcohol to gas ratio or higher. Have some gas in your trunk and when you drive away dilute it asap. the alcohol will be hard on your engine.

No guarantees it'll work. Do your research for your specific engine and fuel delivery system. I'm from MI, so I have no idea if it's legal or not. Good luck.

SMOG testing is BS IMHO, though. My feeling is this is a free country and you can emit as much smog as you d*** well please.

Re: Will not pass smog

if your car is in good tune.....go to your local parts store and buy an emission additive.......before you test... DRIVE THE CAR AT LEAST 1/2 HOUR AND DON'T SHUT THE CAR OFF...GOOD LUCK

I ran into this with my truck. Block off the radiator with a piece of cardboard. and with about 6 gallons in the tank of gas i put two pints of alcohol in the tank. Drove it for a bit then I held it at about 2500-3k rpms 30 seconds before the test to get it hot and it passed with flying colors. and when i failed before hand I was close to being a gross polluter. Note* dont block off the whole radiatior with cardboard on a hot day.

Re: Will not pass smog

How far out are you?

If it is close as others noted some alcohol might help (for the car but you could also try some for the tester...). Also make sure the engine is warm for the test.

As a side note, has anyone tried topping up with E85 for this purpose (obviously not a full tank!)?

Re: Will not pass smog

A gal of E85 to about 5 gals of lets say E10 or 12 since that what gas is now in cali and we cant get any pure stuff anymore. should work and proboly be cheaper than going to the drug store for denatured alcohal.

as far as other parts... Thermostat can cause tons of prolems. but cardbord in front of the radiator should fix this problem.
