EDIT: Stall problem subsided, still smoke and gas fumes
Hey everyone,
This is my first post, for my first thirdgen, for my first problem. I just bought an 89 GTA with a Holley carb and a 355. The car starts normally, sometimes i have to give it gas, but then it stalls in a number of different ways. First, it sometimes stalls right at idle, unless I sit there pumping the accelerator for 5 minutes. Then, if I put it into reverse, it usually will go until the end of my driveway, which is a pretty steep incline. Then it will stall out. If somehow I get out of the driveway, and try to turn around in the cul de sac, it also stalls out. There is also a lot of white smoke coming from my exhaust, and it smells like gasoline. It ran fine most of today, but now keeps stalling. Any help?

Re: Engine stalls sometimes at idle, and other times
Welcome to TGO.
We need alot more info to help. Starting with ....
1) was the electric in-tank fuel pump used when converted to carb?
2) if so, was a return-style regulator used?
3) what's timing set at?
4) does it have a vacuum-advanced dist?
5) auto tranny?

Thanks for the reply!
Sorry I didn't have that information in the first post, but the trouble is... well... I'm not really sure. I know the fuel pump is in the back, so I assume its the original one. As to your second post, jeez, I don't even know what that means. It has a gauge on the passenger side of the carb that shows fuel pressure.
I am a total newbie to timing. I have virtually no clue how to set it, or what good timing is like. For #4, No clue whatsoever. Any way I can check for that?
Finally, yes, the transmission is auto.
For what its worth, I managed to help the idle. I adjusted the fuel/air ratio on the carb, and now it idles much better. Still though, the more prevalent problem is that it makes a TON of gasoline-like fumes. It fills my garage (and house) in seconds. I think I have the idle thing straightened out, but now its more about those fumes and the white smoke. I think the smoke is normal, because after the engine warms up, it goes away. Still tons of gas fumes though. Sorry to change the idea of the thread, but from one problem stems another I suppose. Thanks again.
