Strange start up
Hello all i have a good one that I can not figure out where to start troubleshooting.
1989 Firebird 5.7L
When I start the car its fine. If i turn off the car (anytime hot or cold) it does not want to restart. If I wait a few minutes it starts but the same repeats if I turn it off.
I have tried the switch the key on and off a few times thinking that the fuel pump maybe losing pressure but that does not work either.
In addition the car has been surging at idle underload or in gear and I have yet to find out why?
Any help is needed..
Thank you
Bill

Pull codes, see what comes up
Im chasing a surging at idle and underload myself, but the car restarts fine.
have you replaced any sensors recently?

Re: Strange start up
When you say does not restart do you mean it cranks over but does not fire or does it not crank over, and if it does crank over does it do so at a slower speed then normal or does it crank over just as fast as normal ?

No the engine willl crank but not fire up. Cranks the same just no fire. wait 5 minutes or less and starts up fine.
Also changed the fuel pump out this weekend and I hope never to have to do that again. Stupid Stupid design flaws in that one.
Still no change. Took it to the shop today to have the exhaust repaired after gas tank removal. There are going to look into the issue for me but I would like a direction for them to go..
Anyone with ideas?

Re: Strange start up
Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. It should be ~42-47 psi when running above idle. Leave the pressure gauge attached then stop the engine and note how quickly the fuel pressure drops. If it doesn't hold pressure for at least 20 seconds the injectors may be leaking, which effectively floods the engine and it might not start for a few minutes.

Thank you that is the next thing I will try. Any suggestions on good injectors?

I was very satisfied with my purchase from FuelInjectorConnection (FIC). Here is the link to exactly what I bought... http://www.corvetteinjectors.com/sho...p?productid=22
I hear very good things about SouthBay Injectors as well.

Re: Strange start up
check your coolant temperature sensor on the front of the engine. Mine went bad and did the same thing.

Re: Strange start up
Thats strange that you say that because it just stopped working this week. The problem was before this but I will check that. Not sure how it links in with performance fuel but you never know.

Re: Strange start up
it just messes with the air fuel ratio on start up. they're cheap anyway so it can't hurt.

Re: Strange start up
Ok the mechanic says the injectors are bad and need replacing. Wants 1200 for all 8 installed. Like thats going to happen. Anyone have the specs on the factory ones? and what would be a good upgrade? Also remanufacturer versus new?
