With all due respect to the administration, that tech article is inaccurate and confusing. The pins of the ALDL are lettered, "A" through "L", not numbered. They begin with "A" in the top right corner. To flash codes you jump pins A&B(top row, far right). From the beginning of GM computer controlled vehicles in 82, through the end of OBD1 in 95, it was always A&B for diagnostic mode.
The behavior of your SES light demonstrates a fault in your diagnostic circuit. At this point I would advise you to connect a scan tool to see if the ECM communicates and check for codes. Check ALDL pin A for continuity to ground.

Re: check engine light
Beats me. Is the car running badly? Maybe check ECM fuse or the connectors to the computer?

We did not write that article. Most of our articles are supplied by members.
If you want to make a better document, we'll certainly be interested.
Thanks

Re: check engine light
Thank you JT. I simply don't wish to show this forum any disrespect. I might think about writing an update to that article. Right now I'm working on uploading a complete set of quality wiring diagrams. I'm scanning and uploading the complete factory electrical diagnosis manual. It covers all versions of the 87 Camaro, in great detail and in color. I have a thread going in Electronics and I'm hoping others will upload diagrams for different years. I'd like TGO to have a great library of diagrams.
