Car suddenly wont start
Ok, i have a 92 formula with a 305 tbi and 700r4 /w OD. my problem is that friday as i was pulling into my drive way i went to give it gas and it just died. i tried to start it back up but it acts as though its not getting a spark. i know its not in the fuel system, as it still injects fuel. ive replaced the coil pack, but to no avail. its never had trouble starting before and its never had any vibrations or misfires or anything of the such. when it died it didnt bog out of any thing it just died. can someone please help me out with this seeing as my car is my only means of transportation thanks

ok dude did you check spark by having some one crank the engine take one spark wire off the plug put a screwdriver into the spark wire then aim it at a grounded area while doing so make sure you arent holding the screwdriver or have one thats insulated as such, then watch for spark. if you get spark then hit me back ill give you some other things to check for before you go spending money on parts take the time and troubleshoot properly...it may possibly be a dead relay or if you already checked the fuel pressure and the two injectors on your hopper are jetting fuel it could be due to a multitude of problems tps sensor flatspot, or ecm issues did you check your fuses? is everthing grounded properly etc...

The HEI ignition module is a common failure item. As is the pick up coil on higher mileage cars. The pick up coil is in the distributor beneath the rotor. The ign mod is also in the distributor. After checking spark, check for power at the pink wire to the coil with the key on. If no power, check the fuse links at the junction block by the battery or at the starter. If you have power to the coil, check for pulse at the white wire to the coil. Use a 12v test light while a helper cranks the engine. The light should flash when held to the white wire. If not, remove the ignition module and take it for testing at Auto Zone or NAPA. Use an ohmmeter to test the pick up coil. It should read 800-1000 ohms. The pick up coil connects to the back of the ignition module in the dist. Its connector has one white and one green wire.

couldn't of said it better doc! just remember if its the ignition module make sure to use the die electric grease on the plate they get super hot and fail repeatedly when baked, also the aftermarket modules from pepgirls and autozone fail quickly replace it with a oem unit or performance module...

You say you verified spark at the coil with the test light? That doesn't sound right. Did you use the test light as a spark tester or did you just get a flash at the white wire? If you get a flash at the white wire and no spark, replace the coil. If you are actually getting a spark from the coil wire, determine wheter it's the coil wire, the cap, or rotor that is causing the spark not to reach the plugs. Be aware, the rotor can short to the distributor shaft causing the spark to ground out. This isn't always obvious and you have to look for signs of carbon tracking to find it.

I'm subscribing to this thread just to run through that checklist ASE doc prescribed. My ride won't start either.
