very interesting find

so back in november 2010 i bought my 88 formula from this guy in va and he didnt really know much about it he got it for free when he bought a 67 mustang. me and this car have come along way and i have done alot of work to it and now im currently going to a carbed set up.

correct me if im wrong but roller cams started in 87 right??

i take my intake and such off and to my surprise i find out this engine has a hydraulic flat cam... the vin reads 305 tbi.. could this be a swap or something? i didnt do anything cam wise to the engine yet.

when it was running it had a whole lot of torque i mean this thing would keep you in your seat when i was just cruising in 1st gear. is it possible i have a 350?

ill get some numbers tomorrow and post them and maybe someone on here can shed some light on this so i wont be so confused.

oh btw is there anyway possible to get the stock distributor to work with the carb set up?

Re: very interesting find

Yes in these cars, roller cams started in 87. MUCH later in some other body styles.

Sounds like the engine's been changed out, rebuilt, or had a cam downgrade at some point. Pretty ordiary stuff. Seems to happen alot, so no big surprise.

Yes it's possible it's a 350. 350 TBI trucks being one of the bodies that didn't get rollers although most of them, the blocks have most of the provisions. They just didn't put in the hardware.

Get the block casting #, that'll tell you what it is.

Can't really use the stock dist with a carb. No provisions for a timing curve. It'll "work", to the extent that the car will "run"; just won't have any pep, power, or fuel economy, and will probably overheat ruthlessly. One of those things that while "possible", sort of, it isn't a "good idea".

Re: very interesting find

i looked inside and it doesnt have anything that my 89 roller cam block had none of the holes for the lifter retainer thing(cant remember the word for that long metal piece)

ill stay away from the distributor idea then..
