do I need a rebuild?

I have a 1986 iroc-z28 with 51,000 original miles never seen snow or rain, sunshine only. took a ride about 5 miles round trip pulled in the driveway and the engine is knocking faster knock when i give is gas. so rebuild or maybe a cheaper fix. And befoer everyone tells me i know its a 305 TPI and why rebuild it right. ill tell you i have a aprassial letter done in april of 2008 for 11K for my car if I change the engine the value is lost. no more matching numbers. thanks everyone.

Re: do I need a rebuild?

knocking or ticking? ticking is valves or exhaust leak, knocking is piston/rod issue.

Re: do I need a rebuild?

11k huh? I'm pretty sure that's about what these cars retailed for in 1986. And that was with zero miles off the show floor. Not to mention that there has been a bazillion of them produced. Just sayin....

Mine had 63000 original miles on it and it was bluebooked for 2175.00

As far as the rebuild question: look farther into the noise before you condem your car to being torn apart by a tech (if your not rebuilding it yourself)

Re: do I need a rebuild?

just saying... no one will pay 11,000 for a car, when there is a boat load of them same thing for a quarter to a third of the price. is your car a unique VIN? what sets it apart? im honestly wondering im not trying to kick a hornet's nest

dont get so easily affended... you'll live longer

Re: do I need a rebuild?

pinging or knocking or ticking? Pinging is a sound like a tamborine (timing related). Ticking is more than likely valves and Knocking (sounds like a tapping with a hammer) is bearings.

Re: do I need a rebuild?

well what sets it apart comes all the way down to the radio in it among other things but the radio was the kicker. what I was told makes mine 1 of 210 made i know there was like what 25,000 iroc-z28 made that year. its not the fact of getting offended so easliy its the fact when someone post something for HELP someone has got to get away from the point and cause posts that are not needed. thats all.

Re: do I need a rebuild?

TNT_Z28 ... you need to take a look at this thread - many of us picked up high mileage 3rd gens for cheap (myself included), but many folks pay alot for pristine cars: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/auto...-you-paid.html

And, even though I only paid $800 for mine, I now have well over $15k into it! To me, my car is priceless, and no appraisal would ever be enough.

If it's a 1 of 200 something car, I'd rebuild I guess.

cool thread. i see your point. especially with the clearification that its a 1 of 200 car.

im in the same boat, i have no idea how much money ive dropped into my car. ive probably spent more money on gaskets than i origanally paid for the car. i wouldnt ever sell my car. the only way we're parting ways is if its totaled.
