86 berlinetta

i have an 86 berlinetta gold edition with a 305 v8 carb engine...has edelbrock carb, edelbrock headers, and edelbroker air filter...i took it to camp a few weeks ago and it overheated on the way there..i had it towed home..when i checked it out i seen that the tanks on the sides of the rad were cracked..i went and bought a new rad, antifreeze and hoses...i installed it this morning and went to fire it up..of course battery was dead so i had to charge it and then fired it up..it didn't take too long for it to begin to smoke...i shut off the engine and went on to the next problem...the thermostat...as i was taking off the housing both bolts snapped and now stuck in the intake..after trying for hours to get them out i decided that i was goin to buy another intake manifold...at the local parts store there is an edelbrock intake but the salesman said it will only work if i do not have an BRG/ERG valve (cant remember which one he said) on it..what exactly is that? i'm new at this mechanic stuff...ive decided not to depend on anyone to help so ive decided to do all the work....could someone help me out on on my current dilemma..thank you

Re: 86 berlinetta

the EGR valve is the exhaust gas recirculation valve. its part of the emmission control system. you dont really nead a new intake. there are two waterneck bolts...

are they both snapped or just one?

in either case, have you tried an ez out?
if its impossible to back it(them) out, you can drill it(them) out and install a heli-coil(s)

its a relitively simple procedure, and the waterneck bolts are in a convinient place to do it. not to mention a lot less work and cheaper than a new intake manifold

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

"EGR" valve. It's an emissions component. Since you've disabled the primary emissions components, eliminating the EGR valve isn't that much farther down the road. However, Edelbrock does make an intake that includes the EGR valve, part # 3701. Of course, it is more expensive. And, the store will probably have to order it. But, you can mount either the Edelbrock or factory stock carburetor to it without an adapter.

You didn't mention the distributor. The factory distributor will not function properly with the Edelbrock carburetor. Does yours have a vacuum line going from the carburetor to the distributor?

Re: 86 berlinetta

i had to replace the distrubitor cap before..but im thinking its stock...i got the car two years ago with the edelbrock carb already on it......there is a hose from the carb to the distributor...

i did some research last nite and it appears my car does not have the EGR valve..both bolts are broke and we tried for hours to get them to twist out....my brother didn't wanna drill them cuz he was afraid that he would screw them up and i didn't wanna take it to a garage to get fixed..too much for labor in my area...
