What happens when remove timing wire when engine is running
What happens when remove timing wire when engine is running
I have a 91 tbi 305. When I was setting the timing I removed the tan cable while the engine was running. Now it feels like I don't get any advance. Also I don't have any codes. Only when I disconnect the wire. I change the est. Still the same thing. Will winadla tell me anything about me timing. If it working.

you unplug the tan wire with the black stripe to set the base timing. 6-8 BTDC then plug the wire back in and check for auto advance, you might see as much as 20 BTDC but i'm more familiar with tpi. hope that helps

Isn't 6-8 BTDC a little high for a stock TBI car? Base factory setting is zero. I've seen folks go to about 4 BTDC, but never 6-8 on a stock motor. But I'm no expert either.
Your supposed to unplug the EST wire BEFORE you start the car. Unplugging it whiole it's running will cause the car to act weird, because you yanked away the computer control of the timing without and warning. If you unplug BEFORE you start the car, then the computer "knows" what your doing and doesn't try to compensate with fuel changes.
Disconnect your batt cable for 5 minutes, to clear all the ECM memory - then reconnect batt cable, unplug the EST BEFORE you start the car, and check/adjust timing correctly.
