making sure ive got this right
On my 305 on the drivers side starting at the front are cylinders 1, 3, 5, 7. The passenger side is 2, 4, 6, 8. To make sure I'm putting my distributor in right I need to find TDC on cylinder 1 (front drivers side) then drop in my distributor so that the rotor is facing the #1 on the disk that holds my plug wires in place on the dist. Which would be about 5:30 with the firewall being 12:00. Then just double check that the plug wires are in the right order.
I don't have and can't get a timing light til tomorrow, but if put together right my car should still start, might run like crap but it should start?

Sounds like you're on the right track. The mark on your balancer should be at 0 and set your base timing. Cyl 1 at TDC and the distributor pointing towards cylinder 1's point. When you plug in your distributor in the computer will advance and retard timing. But to answer your question, yes it will run.

Ok, it got dark on me so I couldn't mess with it too much. I pulled the number one plug stuck my finger in the hole had someone turn the key til my finger got pushed out, tried to turn the crank pully with a ratchet to get exactly TDC. Should it be really hard to turn by hand? Even pulled out another plug to try and make it easier. Since it was getting dark I just pulled the cap and the rotor is facing a lil before 3:00, would it be that far off after getting my finger pushed out of the hole? And the pully was hard to turn by hand to the point that when trying to spin it to the left the nut came loose. Do I need to pull all the plugs to make it easy enough to spin by hand? Also is it possible for the peice that falls into the slot to have spun inside the dist shaft?

Yes it will be difficult to turn by hand... It will make it easier if you remove all the plugs or if you apply the proper amount of leverage such as a breaker bar or section of pipe on your socket wrench.
It won't matter if the rotor is pointed at 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 o'clock as long as you set up the firing order correctly. If you want it pointed at 5:30, it just takes some figgiting with dropping the dist. in so the gears mesh correctly.
