Not sure where to post this. I have a 305 that come from a 91 Caprice. Running the TPI intake. I'm running OBD2. Has a 96 truck ECM.

My question is if I swap the cam to the 305 vortec cam(which is the same as the L31) and have the ECM flashed for the 305 vortec. This should give me a good baseline to tune from or so that is my take on it.

Does that sound right or am I over thinking.

 

There's a good possibility that the engine you have doesn't have a roller cam. Which rules out using the stock cam from a Vortec motor.

Not sure a CPFI tune would really work "right" on a MPFI setup; injector constants (offset for example) would be WAY different. Can't see any real benefit to changing to that. You'd probably be better off not bothering with a stock CPFI bin and just work on whatever tune you already have.

 

The motor is a factory roller cam motor. As of now the ecm is tuned for a L31. I dont know how much differences there is in the L31 and L30 tunes. was just thinking with a stock L30 tune and the L30 cam it would be close to the same as a stock L30.

 

Can't think of many more effective ways to waste time money & effort than to swap ANY stock cam for ANY OTHER stock cam.... I'd either put a better cam in it, or leave it alone.

I'm REAL surprised that it has a roller cam. Most of those TBI motors, with the exception of F-body ones, didn't. Trucks & Caprices generally didn't get em until much later (96 or so). I guess you're just lucky.

 

How is it a waste of time and money. I have all the parts. I think it all should work together. Basically trying to get it to run somewhat decent on a stock tune. Plans are to swap in a crate l31 when funds allow. So for now have to make do with what I have on hand.

 

waste of time because you will see no gain in performance whatsoever...

waste of money because when you open your motor up to do the cam, you might as replace the timing chain, definatly replace the front main seal, probably have to replace the pan gasket, and you should replace the lifters (which requires the intake to be removed, so those gaskets need to be replaced).

and with all of that youll probably find something else that needs to be done cause thats how this stuff goes...

 

ANd on top of that, it's entirely possible - no, MORE LIKELY than not - that the "other" stock cam you get, will be IDENTICAL to the one you're taking out.

Altoghether, too much maze, and not enough cheeze.

 

Motor already has new timing chain, and gaskets. Plus I have a full gasket kit already.

And from the reading i have done the cams are different.

 

And Im not looking for a performance gain as this is not in a F-body. As of now I have a L31 tune in the ECM and it runs big rich.
