Ignition timing a bit off
The 350 I swapped in runs, and has a good idle, but it hesitates a bit when I mush the gas pedal. When it gets around 4500 rpms I can let off and when it rumbles down, my exhaust shoots a fireball haha. I have a timing light but its old and missing the spark plug clip so I just spitballed the timing to get it to run. Is it too much advance? or too much retard on the ignition timing that makes the throttle response hesitate a little? I also dont think that spit fire action from the exhaust from the rumble down is normal either, no matter how cool it looks.

Re: Ignition timing a bit off
Could be wrong but i think its to far advanced and running rich the advancements allowing the ingition process to overlap with exhaust vavle stroke witch would allow the richness of unburnt gas enter the exhaust and continue to burn i would start by getting a new light

This engine is really touchy, just a few degrees in either rotation will cause the idle to go down, and its still running a bit rough.. still have no timing light, and I still need new wires and a cap/rotor.

Grab a timing light! They can be had for $15 now at Harbor Freight - why beat around when the real fix is so cheap?

I would suggest fixing any known issues(cap, rotor, plugs, and wires) before attempting to dial in the timing. Once all issues are resolved with your ignition components then throw a timing light on it and see where you are.

Re: Ignition timing a bit off
Got it. I knew the new cap/rotor and plug wires would make the world of difference.. and it did. Its still not in time, but it runs. Ill get the timing light on it tomorrow when I get to my dads shop.
NEW ISSUE.
Im sure I know what it is and Im waiting for it to free up; the throttle valve in the tranny is stuck, and I have to haul ace to get it to shift. I can get into 3 gear but I gotta do about 45 to do it, but the speed limit is 35 haha. Plus people think Im racing and I dont want that. I have the TV cable disconnected at the throttle linkage, and just waiting for it to unstick. So, should I get the cable that matches the vehicle the engine came out of, or use the Camaro's original cable and buy a linkage kit to make the cable seem longer? I swapped a 1990 Chevy G20 5.7L into the Camaro.. its a beast, but I still need to work out the bugs.

Oh yea, and I went probably about 80? (no speedometer yet, tach is disconnected) and didnt go into 4th. It should be the stuck valve issue related, and nothing else, these trans should shift themselves, theyre not computer controlled in any way

I"d love you help you out with that but I don't know anything about auto trannys.
I'm a stick man myself, The rust on the distributor pickup points shouldn't be a big deal. I wouldn't worry about it, Also They're right with the timing idea. Its not hard to get it timed right and it makes a WORLD of difference.
Good luck!

Re: Ignition timing a bit off
I think, trying to time the ignition by ear isnt working to good, maybe due to the IAC valve sticking or something. The engine idles very roughly, and Im rotating the distributor to compensate for the bad IAC. Anyone ever had this problem? Im getting a better IAC tomorrow, a buddy has a new one that he didnt use yet. Me and my friend are gonna buy this 86 or 87 Camaro with a 5 speed standard. Im putting the standard in my car, he gets the car, and my old automatic that needs a shift kit and a rebuild. We're paying half and half on it.. just $500.

Re: Ignition timing a bit off
Rotating the dizzy wouldnt compensate for iac 2 diff things they may both may raise lower iDle but 1 cant hurt the engine to compinsAte for iac u change the air/fuel ratio not when it fires and there are acouple of proven ways to deal with the tv valve/cable but sence you are goin to a 5 speed u wont need it But heres some reading for u or any1 else http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php

I got the valve to unstick, it went into overdrive finally today. But Im getting this 5 speed soon so thats not an issue anymore. I just need to go over this thing when I get the chance, Ive been working alot and hardly have time to work on the car :/
