305 rebuild

Hey All,
I finally got the drivers side head pulled on my 305 HO.The guy would I got it from told me that it had sat outside for a long period of time.Well, when I pulled the drivers head, I noticed water sitting ontop of the number 1 piston,
and some rust in a couple other piston.Just curious, what has caused this to
happen?

Hmmmm... just not sure.... but there does seem to be a pattern here...

But being as how it's a 305, and you're obviously a highly intelligent person (as evidenced by knowing that this is the right place to come to get even more knowledge), you'll just be throwing that in the trash anyway, because no sensible person in their right mind would waste their money on a 305 short block. So besides teaching you why it's a bad idea to leave engines sitting exposed outdoors, it doesn't really matter, since even if that hadn't happened to it, it still would have been garbage.

Re: 305 rebuild

When you shut an engine off, the valves don't all close. Water can get past the ones that are still open.
Now, hunt for a 350 short-block. It needs to have dished pistons, so you can use your #416 heads. Even so, you should be able to get one for under $200. Even if you can fix the 305 for less than that, it's not worth it.

Re: 305 rebuild

The heads will need a visit to a machine shop. The minor rust will be taken care of, no need to worry or stress. I suggest getting them cut for 1.94" valves, it won't add much extra cost, and will help flow. Just be sure they do a 75 degree throat cut after the 3-angle. Some call this a bowl hog.
