700r4 troubles
i have a 355 sbc, 3000 stall convertor, and 700r4 trans. im having an issue that under hard acceleration it seems to "miss" in third gear. under normal driving its fine. i tried adjusting the tv cable but i get no clicks when i do it. i did what the manual on my shift kit said but it shifts really soft and doesnt feel right. so my question is do i got to move the slider toward carb or away? right now the slider is all the way toward firewall and i cant go back any farther. is my cable all out of wack or is it the tranny?

Re: 700r4 troubles
Move the slider all the way towards the firewall, and then move the throttle lever all the way to WOT - the clicks occur when you do the last step.
There is no fudging on the TV cable - you cannot set it where you ant ... it HAS to be set where it gets set by doing the adjustment procedure.

Re: 700r4 troubles
i have the thing as far back as it will go, i cant move it any farther back.. i have the edelbrock corrector and the stock tv cable bracket. i tried aftermarket ones and they flex way to much and moved when accelerating... so how do i make the cable tighter if its maxed out toward the firewall?

Re: 700r4 troubles
Need to get a new bracket, but in the meantime: I first made sure that the tv link point was as close to the 'geometry corrector' point as my carb throttle bracket would allow. Then I ratcheted the outer cable out thru the slider to the max extent. Next, pulled the inner cable out, and put a few very small tie wraps around it to create the spacer. I mean tiny ties, like 2-3mm wide. I was able to fine-tune the number of ties to get it to shift exactly right.
Looks real 'ghetto' but works quite well for now.

Re: 700r4 troubles
I used 1/8" brazing rod. I hammered them into loops so they would fit tightly around the cable. This gave me 1/4" to work with.

Re: 700r4 troubles
Does the TV cable stretch? No. Have the cable ties stretched? No, been like this for about 6 months and its still where I set it. Though the brazing rod idea does seem a little less dodgy.

Re: 700r4 troubles
im refering to when the carb bracket is set in the "idle" position how far is the slider supposed to be out? i can pull the end of cable and have about an 1inch or so. is that to far?

Re: 700r4 troubles
That sounds about right, at idle you should be able to pull the cable out about an inch.
The tv cable is pulling against a spring loaded valve in the transmission. When you pull the cable, you are pulling against this spring - you can feel it pull back. The cable will only come out so far, before this tv valve reaches the limit of travel.
The aim of the adjustment is to make this limit of travel co-incide with the WOT throttle position. Thats what the rachet adjustment allows you to do - at least it does, if the bracket mounting the tv cable puts the adjuster the right distance from the carb.
It's also important that the cable + tv valve return to the right position at idle. This position is set by cable mount point on the carb throttle bracket, and it's radial position and distance from the throttle shaft. Thats what those 'geometry correctors' do. It can also be affected by the aforementioned spring in the tranny, which may have changed length over time.
From what I've read, short sloppy shifts like yours are a big tranny killer. Here's a link to a good article with tons of detail on this, especially read the 'illness' section:

Re: 700r4 troubles
So going all the way back to post 1... are you fiddling with the tv cable to try to cure a misfire? It won't.
Have you done the usual tuneup stuff, plugs wires timing etc?

Re: 700r4 troubles
Your tv adjustment will not cause the trans to "miss" third.
