fuel and carb problems
91 rs the guy i got it from had it carb already with a fuel pump electric fuel pump in the front he blocked off the return line and put a cheap fuel pressure regulator. the distributor vac line wasnt going to the carb and the carb was leaking a lot of gas.. now i want to take off the cheap fuel pressure regulator n buy a better one that does its job correctly but i dont know which one to get, if i need to connect to the return line to the fuel pressure regulator too.

Re: fuel and carb problems
You need a Mallory 4309 or similar return-style regulator, and use the return line - this assumes the in-tank electric pump has not already burnt itself up.
If the intank pump is dead, it needs removed, and either replaced with another pump, or replaced with a carb pickup, at which point you can use any external electric pump or even a mechnanical pump on the block and not worry with the fuel pressure regulator.

you dont have to remove the old in tank, just un hook it and use the wiring harness for it to run inline eletric, saves time and effort, run the original fuel line.the in tank doesnt cause any drag and you dont have to drop the rear and tank

Re: fuel and carb problems
I agree. Mallory 4309 with return style should work if the intank is still good. If it was a fuel injection pump prior it's getting way to much pressure to be bottle necked by the non-return style regulator. In that case it's pushing 40+ psi into a regulator that's trying to stop it at 6.0 to 8.5 psi. That'll build up heat in the pump and kill the pump. It also can/will overpower the regulator and force more to the carb causing leaks and other issues.
You shouldn't try to pull fuel through a dead pump. It'll just make the new pump work harder and kill it. Also when fuel pumps die they sometimes tend to send debris through the lines.

Re: fuel and carb problems
so i should take off the pump that is in the front leave the intank and add then just add the regulator, im like 99% sure the intank is still working thats why it flooded the carb i shoul put the regulator before the carb, like in figure 3b right...well like the 2nd sample down

Re: fuel and carb problems
Yes, put regulator under the hood. The larger 3/8th line is the feed, runs to any side port on the 4309. Smaller 5/16 line is return, connects to bottom of the 4309. Then another 3/8th line from any other side port on 4309 to your carb (with another small filter inline). You can get metric-to-NPT adapters at any local hardwarte store in the brass plumbing section, as well as the 5/16 and 3/8 hose barbs.

Re: fuel and carb problems
hay where you have your pump is in the wayyyy wrong place, should be above the rearend, screwed to the back of the seat right next to the tank and use the wiring harness for reg fuel pump, they arent good at pulling fuel but there great at pushing it.

Re: fuel and carb problems
Bracket is used on the top side to mount it. Make sure where you pick you can get to the set screw easily. That's how you adjust the pressure.

Re: fuel and carb problems
Which ever way you want to mount it should work. I would just recommend the set screw in a place you can adjust it if necessary. That set screw on the top is what will adjust the pressure to the carb. Mine is mounted like your #2 picture over by the washer fluid bottle, since it was close to the factory feed and return lines.
Looks like #3 is the brass spacer in the instructions used to modify pumps.
