How can I remove the flywheel?

Hey guys I'm throwing out the old 305 tpi and putting in a new 383 carburated engine. I want to resurface the flywheel, but I can't seem to take off the bolts. I've tried a 14mm, 1/2 inch, 9/16 inch wrench and socket, and both clockwise and counterclockwise. Those bolts will not give, not even a little. Any suggestions? A new flywheel is around $200.

Thanks fellas.

I dont know what size the stock ones are offhand, but they are fairly tight as if they come loose, you have serious problems. Since your junking the engine, just put some bolts or something in the spark plug holes to lock up the motor. Then use a breaker bar to loosen the bolts. They are RH threads, so they come off in the usual manner.

Re: How can I remove the flywheel?

All you need is a flywheel tool.It grabs the teeth and holds the flywheel from turning when you loosen or tighten the bolts, also useful for bolting up the converter so you can turn the flywheel under the car.If you break the bolt or bolts all you need is an extractor set.Try putting a cheater bar on your socket wrench or wrench while holding back on the flywheel.
I have had to bury the hold back tool in my stomach before while using a cheater to get them out.I have only ever broken one bolt.

Yeah those bolts are usually loc-tited too, just to make sure they dont back out.

You'll need to get some force on it, that iwll require locking up the engine somehow or other. Have you tried an impact wrench?

Also, just in case you're not aware, if your 383 is a 2 pc RMS engine, and your 305 TPI is a 1 pc RMS engine, the flywheel wont fit.

Re: How can I remove the flywheel?

one word ... LEVERAGE! Get a rachet on them, and get the handle from your jack, slip it over the end of the rachet handle. Then, I think I just wedged something (thick screwdriver or smaller jack handle) into the flywheel holes to catch on the motor somewhere and keep it from turning. The leverage makes all the difference in the world!
