Engine Sounds like rocks in a metal pan

I have a 92 Z28 L98 350

i was driving floored itand it died anyone have any ideas? it does restart while holding gas sounds like rocks in a metal pan so i havent started it since its siting a few blocks from my house

what test can i do to see the problem?

What does the oil look like? Pristine and clear, blackened, glittery with metal chips, or what?

I almost want to say it sounds like your catalytic converter is toast. They can sound like that when they go belly up and can choke the exhaust, which could possibly be the cause of the stalling. Is the sound definitely coming from the engine or under the car?
