engine build!

I've got a 91 firebird formula TPI 5.0 .Im starting to build a street/strip engine for it. I have "rebuilt" many sbc engines, but this is the first "performance" engine I have a goal for. im looking to have at least 400hp at the wheel. i have a 350 4 bolt main block out of a early 90's blazer. Can someone please help me with a list of parts i will need. reviews on parts would be alot of help also.

trans-700r4
rear end- 7.5 now, will be replacing with 9in ford (373 gear)

Re: engine build!

I'd say start comparing cylinder heads and go from there. It all depends on your budget too. A 383 rotating assembly is a good start too. And they are affordable now compared to a few years ago.

Re: engine build!

thank for the reply. I have been thinking of a 383 " 6in rods of course". I have a set of stock vortec head i took off of a Z71, and my friends a ***** ,but his dad is a machinist and loves sbc engines, pretty sure he would help me out on all the machine work, to put 2.02 intakes and 1.60 exhaust valve. I have also been thinking about doing the work to my 305 TPI heads just for the simple fact that the combustion chamber is smaller compared to the vortec's.

Did you plan on running a carburetor or your TPI? Do you have a budget? 400HP @ the wheel is roughly 500HP at the crank....for a sbc chevy this is not a very streetable engine and will not produce vacuum needed for power accesories, but can be done with extra modifications. To get that power your going to need compression, good 190-200cc runner heads, a big cam and a good induction system. Cubic inches is going to be your friend here as well.... 383 stroker is the way to go.
