oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

just got my motor ready to start for the first time, but i have a big problem. from cranking the motor over i noticed that i had oil leaking form the oilfilter. further investigation lead me to belive it was a bad oilfitler i replace the K&N oilfiter with a STP filter yet have the same problem. i thought it was the oil pressure relief valve in the oilpump, so i removed the oilpump and took it a part. the valve moved fine and the spring was seated properly, as i would expect as it was new. I need suggestions for this problem asap. so any input would be greatly apreciated.

Re: oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

are you sure it's from the oil filter and not the oil pressure sending unit?

yes i'm very sure that the location of the leak is the oilfilter.

Check to see if an old filter gasket is stuck on the oil filter mount. Double gaskets will leak like that.

I have had this happen to me. The old gasket is stuck, but it is hard to see.

Please don't be offended, the only 2 things I can think of --
A crack in the block casting
The 2 bolts holding the oil filter spin-on adapter may be loose.

Re: oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

Some of the oil filters have an extra thick sealing ring. Ive had these leak as well with high pressure oil pumps. I have a standard volume melling with a high pressure spring that has 70 PSI at all times. The mobil-1 filter was the one I had issues with. It would just spew oil when installed normally. If I cranked it way down, it would stem most of it, but still leak a little. Some companies like purolator use a thinner sealing ring. If everything else looks ok, try one of the pure-ones or a similar filter with a thin sealing ring and see if it still leaks.

Re: oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

When I fire my race engine up it has nearly 100psi pressure on 5/40 fully synthetic if it had 20/50 in it then it may well leak, I let it warm gradually before getting jizzy on the throttle to save oil filter blow out because I have locked out the oil filter bypass valve as its only really required if you are lazy and dont change your oil filter as often as you should or for starting on cold mornings with thick oil and has no place on a race only car and wonder if you have done this as to sit warming the engine for 5 minutes or so wouldnt be practical on a street driven car but for a pure race car is not a problem.

i have a standard volume/pressure mellings pump. i had a k&n filter at first, it was tightend down normally but when i went to take it back of it was super tight. the second filter was a mobil one. i'll try a pure-one filter when i put the pump back in. my machinist said that the oil pump's relief valve could have been stuck from sitting. so i hope it works after taking it apart.

sorry ur post is a little hard to read, but i get the jist of it. i never started the motor yet, if i had it proly would have burst the filter. your comments don't really apply to me seeing as its a street motor running 10w30 and the standard pump shouldn't produce more than 50 psi. thanks for ur input.

Re: oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

I'm english sorry lol! Have you blocked out the oil filter bypass valve? As I am sure you are aware its in the little alloy block that holds on the filter not in the oil pump thats the pressure release valve.

Re: oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

I have had a motor that the oil filter adapter was cracked in half.
When I took the filter off everything looked fine, put it back 2gether Started it up and it would leak oil ! I finally took the adapter off and found it was broke in 2 pieces! Replaced the adapter and all was fine in the world.

Re: oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

Yep good point its only a silly bit of alloy casting and and over tightening the filter or running an oil cooler takeoff can easy strain it.

Re: oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

Well surely it can only be the pressure release valve in the oil pump and/or the oil filter bypass valve. If the pump is generating too much pressure and you have blocked the filter bypass valve then this could happen which is why I am carefull when I start my car up cold.

So what was the oil pressure problem?

Re: oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

I had two issues with that problem. the first being a missing oil plug under the head. and the second problem was that the machine shop drove a second plug under the main cap with out removeing the old plug. I'm not sure who droped the ball on that but the machine shop was supposed to remove and replace all the plugs when it was sent to be boiled.

Re: oil leak from oil filter, excessive pressure?

are you getting oil to the top of the motor pressure is resistance to flow so something in the block could be blocking the oil and it has nowhere to go and the filter is first to give and the relief in the pump for not giving in
