88 IROC won't start

This post is in relation to my other post, except this is why I had to remove the ignition switch. The other day I went out to the car and tried to start it but the engine would not crank. When I turn the key, the dash lights come on but the starter doesn't turn over, and no clicking sound can be heard.

I tested the battery, it measures 12.4v. I tried jumping the car but it would not jump with a booster. I then ran a jumper wire from the battery to the S terminal on the starter and the motor turned the engine over immediately. The voltmeter on the battery measured 14.4 at idle.

I ran the car for ten minutes and then shut it off, I then tried turning the key to start it but same thing, lights ok, no crank, no click.

I think this may be either a wire or relay. There are a bunch of wires hanging down under the steering column near the fuse box that I might have kicked, but I don't know what they are. Can someone send me the wiring diagram or relay information? Thoughts?

Re: 88 IROC won't start

Alright, I figured out what was happening. After removing the steering wheel, dropping the steering shaft, bending and twisting upside down, removing the ignition switch (pain in the @$$), it turned out not to be anything related to OEM electrical or hardware. At some point in the past a previous owner Installed an aftermarket kendwood alarm system, a pretty sophisticated one.

Well, he cut into the ignition wire and added a valet switch that toggles the circuit open and closed. I guess the wire that plugged into the alarm, which completed the circuit, somehow came loose. It wasn't until I decided to rip out the alarm (seeing as it never worked since I've owned the car), did I realize the yellow wire needed to be twisted back together to complete the ignition circuit. Then, the car was able to turn over.

I'm so happy I didn't have to shop the car, I didn't need that kind of expense.

If anyone is interested I will post a detailed walkthrough with pics on how to remove the steering wheel, column and ignition switch.
